Holiday Savers

Happy Holidays Weld County WIC Colorado‘Tis the season for holiday celebrations. Gatherings with family and friends involve various traditions, but food is central. Eating brings people together: we often celebrate, console, and express affection for one another by sharing a meal.

For many of us, the holidays can mean extra financial strain. Whether you are hosting a gathering or bringing a dish to pass, we’re sharing some of our favorite recipes and shopping tips that save time and won’t break the bank.

Shopping Tips that Save

  1. Shop the ads: buying items when they’re on sale just makes sense, but sometimes it isn’t convenient. Many stores have their ads available on an app or online, so they’re easily accessible.
  2. Sign up for store savings: Many stores have apps with coupons or loyalty cards that can save you a lot of money in the long-run. Some stores even have incentives such as gas discounts. Be sure to research your favorite grocery stores and take advantage of these opportunities to save. The hardest part is remembering to present the bar code when you check out!
  3. Plan ahead: Make a list and stick to it. This can help save money on impulse purchases that you may not need. Additionally, looking at ads and scouting your app can take some time, but it’s worth the extra few minutes.
  4. Look at unit prices: Unit prices tell you how much you’re paying per unit and make it easy to compare prices. They’re often in ounces, and a great tool to compare products to ensure your dollar goes further.
  5. Buy in-season: Buying fruits and vegetables that are in season can save a lot of money, plus they’re typically better quality. Right now, root vegetables, squash, broccoli, pears and citrus fruits are in-season. Check out this guide for more info. Craving something that isn’t in season right now? Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables are just as nutritious.
