February is American Heart Month and Go Red for Women®

Empowering Women to Make Heart Healthy Choices

Developed by: HHS, NIH, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute

According to the American Heart Association, the leading killer of women is heart disease. 1 in 3 women will die from the disease, accounting for more deaths annually than all forms of cancer combined.

Fortunately, many of the major risk factors for developing heart disease are things we have control over i.e. the foods we eat, our activity level, and choosing to abstain from smoking.

The WIC program can help!

WIC offers individualized nutrition education, supplemental food packages, breastfeeding help, and community health referrals for pregnant and postpartum women. We also serve children from infancy to age 5. These early years are a crucial time for every family to establish healthy habits and lifestyle practices.

Many of the foods offered on the program are known as key players in a heart healthy diet: such as whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables. These foods are high in dietary fiber, which can help the body get rid of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol, protecting the heart and blood vessels.

WIC education sessions recommend limits on screen time and inspire active play in children. We also promote a healthy activity/exercise level for pregnant and postpartum women.

Smoking cessation is highly encouraged to our clients through the Baby and Me, Tobacco Free Program.

At WIC we are more than happy to provide direct support to women who are looking to make heart healthy choices for themselves and their families.
